Trail Description

Tannis, Batchelor, and Edwards Lake Loop is a quiet little gem in the Sechelt backcountry, up in the Mount Steele area above the Sunshine Coast. This 8 km loop has gentle elevation, about 264 m of gain to around 1134 m, so it feels more like a long stroll than a grind, but the drive in is the real crux. Once you’re on foot, it’s an easy loop that most hikers knock off in around 2 hours and change.

The trail winds through subalpine forest and low brush, with steady views opening up around the lakes. You only get quick peeks at Tannis Lake, but Batchelor Lake has great access and a cozy cabin that’s a fun stop, especially in winter when people snowshoe in to enjoy the wood stove. If you extend toward Edwards Lake and cabin, the route gets a bit more rugged and overgrown, but the lakes and higher views toward Mount Steele make it worth the extra effort.

Current reports for the Tannis, Batchelor, and Edwards Lake Loop say the last 5 km of the access road are very rough, with big rocks, washed-out culverts, and a need for good clearance; many people park lower and walk the rest. On trail, expect some brushy sections, seasonal mosquitoes, and lots of bear sign, with the odd close sighting, so bring spray, make noise, and keep your head up. No dogs are allowed due to the watershed, and the loop is best from late spring to fall, when the snow is gone, the blueberries are out, and the lakes are tempting, even if the water is usually too cold for more than a quick dip.
