Trail Description

Halfmoon Loop in Sechelt is a quick, low-commitment forest walk that still feels like you’ve actually “gone for a hike.” At about 4 km with only 100 m of gain and a high point around 212 m, it’s very easy, usually done in about an hour, and works well as a before-work leg-stretcher or a mellow intro to Sunshine Coast trails.

The loop winds through classic coastal forest with a mix of soft dirt, roots, and a few short, easy climbs. You’ll pass through sections with mossy rock, ferns, and tall evergreens, with occasional peekaboo openings that remind you you’re just outside Sechelt, not deep in the backcountry. It’s a good spot to find some quiet, listen for birds, and get that damp-forest smell the Coast is known for.

Recent reports say Halfmoon Loop is generally in good shape year-round, with only a few small trees or rotten windfalls popping up now and then on sections like RPM, Lumpy, Tinpan, and Howler, usually easy to step over or around. After rain it can be damp and a bit muddy in spots, but nothing technical, and the old wasp nest on Howler seems to be gone. Trail volunteers stay on top of clearing blowdowns, so you can hike this loop comfortably in fall and winter as well as the drier months from February through October; just bring decent footwear and expect the typical coastal wet roots when it’s been raining.
