Trail Description

Cairn Mountain from Cawley Point is a short but rewarding out-and-back trail on the Sunshine Coast near Sechelt, British Columbia. At 5.3 km with about 264 m of elevation gain, it’s a solid moderate hike that most people finish in around 1 hour 50 minutes, with enough climbing to feel like real exercise without being a suffer-fest.

The trail up Cairn Mountain starts out mellow, then gradually works its way uphill through classic coastal forest, with roots, rocks, and a few steeper sections to keep things interesting. As you gain height toward the 249 m high point, you’ll catch breaks in the trees with partial views toward the water and surrounding hills, plus lots of chances to spot birds and enjoy the quiet away from town.

Recent reports describe Cairn Mountain from Cawley Point as a clear, straightforward route, but it can be slick after rain and muddy in shaded spots, so decent footwear is important. This Sechelt-area hike is open year-round, though winter can bring wet, windy conditions and shorter daylight, so plan your timing and layers. Dogs are allowed on leash, and since it’s usually a quiet trail, carrying a map or GPS track and letting someone know your plans is a smart move before you head out.
