Trail Description
Big Tree and Shakecutters Loop in Sechelt, BC is a quick forest fix that delivers more than you’d expect for a 1.9 km stroll. This very easy loop takes under half an hour for most people, with only 44 m of elevation gain, so it’s ideal when you want to stretch your legs without committing to a full-on hike.
The trail winds through the Big Tree Recreation Site, a mix of second-growth forest and pockets of old growth, including some impressively big Douglas firs that give the loop its name. Underfoot it’s mostly smooth and gentle, with classic coastal forest vibes: ferns, moss, and mushrooms in season, plus a soft, quiet feel that makes it a relaxing walk more than a workout.
Recent reports say fall conditions on Big Tree and Shakecutters Loop are great, with dry, easy footing and only light traffic, though you may see the odd group of mountain bikers. Access is via a gravel road near Sechelt that most cars can handle if you take it slow around a few potholes, and parking at the trailhead is a bit tight but usually workable, with a pit toilet available. The loop is open year-round and stays very manageable in most weather, so it’s a solid choice for a low-key tootle in the woods whenever you’re on the Sunshine Coast.
