Trail Description
Roberts Creek via Wicked Ditches is a quirky little loop that strings together the best bits of Mount Elphinstone and Cliff Gilker Park in Roberts Creek, BC. At about 7.9 km with 218 m of gain, it’s an easy half-day wander that usually takes just over two hours, more about exploring than grinding out elevation. Expect a mix of forest paths, utility corridor, and park trails rather than a pure “backcountry” feel.
The route starts on Mount Elphinstone’s Black Tower trail, shared with mountain bikers, then pops out under power lines before skirting an equestrian property and dropping into Cliff Gilker’s network of colour-marked trails. Once you’re in Cliff Gilker, Roberts Creek via Wicked Ditches really shines, with constant stream crossings, small waterfalls, and cool, shaded forest. You’ll hear the nearby road and even pass close to a golf course in spots, but the water and woods keep it interesting.
Current reports say several bridges are closed or broken, so be ready for minor detours, wet feet, and some picking your way across streams. The AllTrails start point for Roberts Creek via Wicked Ditches is off, and some people have been led to a private driveway, so give yourself extra time to locate the real trailhead and follow the physical signs instead of blindly trusting your phone. Late summer and fall can mean dense foliage, ripe berries, and bear activity, so carry bear spray, make noise, and keep dogs leashed; this loop is hikeable year-round, but expect mud and slick roots after rain and a slightly longer distance than the official 7.9 km suggests.
