Trail Description

3rd Step Loop in Roberts Creek is one of those quick, no-stress walks you do when you just want to move your legs and get outside. At 2.7 km with barely any elevation gain, it’s an easy loop that usually takes around half an hour, making it a handy option for locals, kids, or a mellow dog walk.

The loop starts out under the power lines, so it’s not exactly a deep-forest escape at first, but it settles into a quieter, more wooded feel as you go. You’re likely to see birds, early-season wildflowers like strawberry blossoms in spring, and the odd garter snake sunning itself along the edge of the trail.

Recent reports say the 3rd Step Loop is well maintained, with friendly folks on the trail and plenty of space to step aside if you do meet others. It’s often used as a training loop for dogs because of the easy grade and simple navigation, but keep them leashed as required. The trail is open year-round, though it feels nicest on a dry, sunny day when the ground is firm and you’re just looking for a short, easy outing in Roberts Creek without having to drive far or gear up for anything serious.
