Trail Description

Soames Hill Loop in Gibsons is the classic quick-up, quick-down hike on the Sunshine Coast. The loop is only about 2.7 km with 150 m of gain, but don’t let the “easy” rating fool you: the staircase section turns it into a solid little workout. Most people are up and down in about an hour, with enough time to linger at the viewpoints over Gibsons Harbour, Keats Island, and Bowen Island.

The trail climbs through cool second-growth forest on a well-marked path, with a few side trails if you want to pad the distance. You can stay on the full loop or cut straight to the main viewpoint by taking the stairs on the left a few hundred metres in. The top opens onto smooth rock slabs with wide views over Howe Sound, a lower lookout first and then a higher one that most people agree is the real payoff.

Current reports say the Soames Hill Loop is well maintained, easy to follow, and busy on weekends, especially at the summit. Expect a lot of stairs, roughly 300–400 of them, which bumps this into light-moderate territory for some, especially kids and older hikers, so take your time and bring water. Locals suggest hiking the loop clockwise for slightly friendlier stair grades, keeping dogs leashed, and staying alert for bears, which are occasionally spotted in the area. The trail is open year-round, but rocks and stairs can be slick in the rain or dark, so plan to finish before sunset and don’t count on washrooms at the trailhead.
