Trail Description

Chaster Falls via Hwy 102 is a moderate out-and-back trail just outside Gibsons, winding up into the forested hills above the Sunshine Coast. At 7.2 km with about 392 m of gain and a high point around 589 m, it’s a solid half-day leg-stretcher that usually takes around two and a half hours, without feeling like a grind. It’s more about a steady climb through classic coastal forest than big summit views.

The route starts a bit rough, then settles into that familiar Gibsons vibe of mossy trunks, filtered light, and quiet singletrack. The first stretch can feel a little dull until you link up with Sidewinder and the Sprockids mountain bike trails, where the terrain gets more interesting and the forest feels deeper and more alive. Many hikers report not actually seeing much of Chaster Falls itself, especially late in the season, so go in expecting a forest hike with possible water features rather than a guaranteed waterfall show.

Recent hikers say the first kilometer from Hwy 102 is overgrown, with brush closing in on the path and some route-finding needed, so long pants are a smart call. Once you’re into the main forest, the track becomes clearer and there are plenty of junctions with other trails if you want to extend or shorten your loop, but having a map app helps you stay oriented. The falls and creeks are more reliable in wetter months; late summer and after drought, water levels can be low and the “falls” underwhelming, so plan your expectations and timing accordingly.
