Trail Description

Soames Hill from Reed Road is a quick hit of elevation right above Gibsons, and it delivers way more view than you’d expect from a 3.4 km out-and-back. You’ll climb about 172 m to around 242 m, so it’s officially rated easy, but the steady stairs make it a legit little workout. In return, you get that classic lookout over Gibsons Landing and the harbour that locals keep coming back for.

The trail heads up through second-growth forest, with well-built wooden steps doing most of the vertical work. There are a few different junctions and side paths on Soames Hill, but if you stay on the main route from Reed Road you’ll pop out at several rocky viewpoints with wide-open views of Gibsons, Keats Island, and the Strait. It’s a short hike, usually around an hour, but the combination of shaded forest, leg-burning stairs, and big coastal views makes it feel pretty satisfying.

Recent hikers say the route is well maintained but dusty in dry weather, and the rocks near the lookouts can get slippery, especially after rain. There are lots of stairs, so expect more of a stair-climb than a gentle stroll, and bring decent shoes for traction. Some people find the markings a bit confusing with all the offshoots, so downloading the AllTrails map for Soames Hill from Reed Road is a smart move, especially on your first visit. It’s hikeable year-round, with the driest, clearest views usually from late spring through early fall, and you’ll likely share the trail with friendly locals and plenty of dogs.
