Trail Description

Mount Elphinstone Summit Trail above Gibsons is one of those Sunshine Coast hikes that feels bigger than it looks on the map. The stats you see online are misleading; this out-and-back is closer to 16–20 km round trip with serious elevation, so plan for a full day, not a quick outing. If you’re up for a long grind through quiet forest to a wide-open summit with views over Howe Sound and out toward Vancouver Island, this is your mountain.

The route starts from Sprockids bike park, then quickly leaves the busier trails behind as you follow yellow diamonds into steady, shaded climbing. The grade is mostly manageable but ramps up hard in the last kilometre, with a short rope section and some scrambling, plus a false summit before the true top. On a clear day the final ridge opens to big coastal views, with a mix of forest, rock, and sky that makes the long ascent feel worth every step.

Recent hikers report very clear markings but inaccurate AllTrails distance and gain, so trust the yellow markers and your legs, not the app. Expect mud patches, blowdowns on steeper sections, bugs and spiderwebs in summer, and lingering snow and ice from late winter into late spring, when the last hour can turn into a steep snow climb. Bring lots of water or a filter for streams and cascades, use poles to save your knees on the descent, and aim for June to October for the safest shot at a snow-free summit on Mount Elphinstone above Gibsons.
