Trail Description
Keats Island Kayak is a quick, low-commitment paddle route just off Gibsons, British Columbia, that feels like a mini coastal escape. At only about an hour out and back and hugging calm shoreline, it’s an easy outing for newer paddlers or anyone looking to stretch the arms and soak up some Sunshine Coast scenery without working too hard.
The route follows the edges of Keats Island, where you’ll cruise past rocky shoreline, small pocket beaches, and classic West Coast forest dropping right to the water. Expect gentle swells, sea birds, and the occasional seal checking you out, plus wide-open views back toward Gibsons and the surrounding islands when the sky is clear.
Conditions around Keats Island Kayak are usually mellow, but wind and boat wake can pick up in the afternoon, so locals tend to launch earlier in the day. Tides matter for landing on small beaches, and water is cold year-round, so dress for immersion and bring a proper PFD even on hot days. The route is very easy in terms of distance and elevation, but it’s still ocean paddling, so check the marine forecast out of Gibsons before you go and treat shoulder seasons with a bit more caution.
