Trail Description

Dakota Creek Falls near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast is a quick out-and-back hike that feels more like a mellow forest stroll than a big mountain mission. At 4.8 km with about 263 m of gain, it’s classed as moderate, but most people with a bit of fitness will find it very doable in under two hours. If you want a quiet, low-traffic trail with a clear path and a solid payoff at the end, this one fits the bill.

The route follows a deactivated logging road, so the walking is straightforward, with no technical sections or scrambling. You’ll wind gently uphill through classic coastal forest before dropping toward Dakota Creek Falls, where you get a close-up view of the small but scenic cascade. There’s only one partial viewpoint toward Howe Sound and it’s nothing dramatic, so this hike is more about the forest and the water than sweeping vistas.

Recent hikers say Dakota Creek Falls can run low, especially in late summer, so aim for fall, winter, or spring if you want more water. The real star of the trail is the massive old-growth Douglas fir near the end, around 10 feet in diameter and worth the walk on its own. Expect a simple out-and-back with no loop, limited views, and generally easy footing; bring decent shoes for the gravel road, keep dogs leashed, and be ready for a short, relaxed outing rather than a full-day adventure above Gibsons.
