Trail Description
Burt's Bluff Trail on Gambier Island near Gibsons is a solid half-day adventure with a real “earn your views” vibe. At 7.6 km out-and-back with about 485 m of gain up to roughly 409 m, it’s rated moderate on paper but feels harder in spots, especially if you’re not hiking regularly. Expect a quieter route than the mainland Sunshine Coast trails, with a more rugged, backcountry feel.
The trail climbs steadily through classic coastal forest, with roots, rocks, and short, punchy steeps that keep your heart rate up. Views open up as you get higher, looking across Howe Sound toward the Sunshine Coast and the North Shore mountains when the weather cooperates. Coming from Brigade Bay, the route can feel wild and remote, and if you link it from Lost Lake, be ready for rougher tread and some light bushwhacking.
Recent hikers report very steep and slippery sections, especially when it’s wet, and that the trail can be hard to follow in places, so don’t rely on vague flagging alone. Good boots, poles, and a GPS track are smart here, and give yourself more than the average 3 hours if you’re not in peak shape or you like breaks. Burt's Bluff Trail is hikeable year-round, but it’s safest and most enjoyable in drier conditions; in winter and after heavy rain, expect mud, slick roots, and slower progress, and turn around if the steep bits start feeling sketchy.
