Trail Description
Whistler Peak: Half Note to High Note is one of those classic Whistler hikes that actually lives up to the hype. This 7.9 km loop sits high above Whistler, topping out around 2,174 m, and packs in about 654 m of gain over roughly 3.5 to 4 hours. You’ll use the Whistler and Peak Express gondolas to get up into the alpine, so the effort-to-view ratio is very much in your favour, as long as you’re ready for some steeper, rocky sections.
Once you’re on the High Note and Half Note trails, it’s non-stop alpine scenery: ridgelines, glaciers in the distance, and those famous turquoise views over Cheakamus Lake and Corrie Lake. The route is mostly well marked and well maintained, but expect some loose rock, short scrambly bits, and a couple of steeper descents where grippy shoes and hiking poles really help. Even on cloudy days, hikers rave about the moody, atmospheric feel, and on clear days you get huge open views the entire way with wildflowers in season.
Current reports from Whistler say the Whistler Peak: Half Note to High Note loop is dry, rocky, and very exposed with almost no shade, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug spray for mosquitoes. Many people underestimate timing because of gondola hours; start early, know the last download time, and be ready to cut to Half Note if you’re running late. The junction back to the Roundhouse can feel a bit unclear, so pay attention to signs, and remember that dogs aren’t allowed on the lifts unless they’re service animals. Prime hiking season is July through September, when snow is mostly gone and the trail is in its best shape.
