Trail Description

Insomnia – Elixir – Highway 86 – Ride Don’t Slide is a serious grind above Whistler, British Columbia, linking a network of steep ski and bike access routes into one big loop. At 11.4 km with about 1,041 m of climbing up to roughly 1,694 m, it’s rated difficult for a reason and usually takes around five and a half hours. This has the feel of a backdoor tour of Whistler Creekside’s ski and bike terrain rather than a classic signed hiking trail.

When it was still reasonable to hike, the route mixed forest road, rough singletrack, and sections that felt more like ski runs than a defined path. The reward was wide-open views over Whistler Valley and the surrounding peaks once you gained enough elevation, with long, punishing ups and downs that kept your heart rate high. The loop format made it satisfying, but the steep grades and uneven surfaces meant you were working the entire time.

Current reports are clear: this Insomnia – Elixir – Highway 86 – Ride Don’t Slide loop sits inside the Whistler Creekside Village mountain bike and ski area, and hiking is not allowed. Patrol has been stopping hikers, and on top of that, the route is partly unmarked, underused for long stretches, and shares space with fast downhill bike traffic, which is unsafe. If you’re visiting Whistler for hiking, look to other established routes like High Note Trail, Singing Pass, or Rainbow Lake, and leave this one off the list unless the resort officially opens it to foot traffic again.
