Trail Description
Riverside Trail in Whistler is a mellow out-and-back walk that sticks close to the Cheakamus River for most of its 6.1 km. With only 217 m of gain and a max elevation around 696 m, it’s rated easy and usually takes under 2 hours, making it a solid option if you want a shorter hike without driving far from the village. Expect company: this is a popular route for casual hikers, runners, and dog walkers.
The draw here is the river itself. You get long stretches of fast-moving water, cool air coming off the current, and a few viewpoints where you can stop and watch the flow roar through the canyon. The Riverside Trail officially ends at the suspension bridge, but many people tack on a quick loop to Loggers Lake for a quiet forest walk and a dip on hot summer days.
Right now, reviews say the Riverside Trail is very icy and extremely slippery, especially from about halfway to the bridge where the ups and downs start. Crampons or solid microspikes are strongly recommended in winter and shoulder season; without them, it’s sketchy. The route is still an easy walking trail in terms of fitness, but it’s no longer as lush as it used to be thanks to drought, some deforestation, and construction along sections, so go in expecting a more impacted, semi-urban forest feel rather than deep backcountry vibes. Summer and early fall bring the most straightforward conditions, while winter demands traction and care.
