Trail Description

Ring Lake and Conflict Lake is one of those classic Whistler hikes that feels like a real adventure, not just a quick viewpoint stroll. The 18.8 km out-and-back route packs in around 749 m of gain, topping out near 1712 m, so it earns its “challenging” label, but strong hikers can usually knock it off in about six hours. You’ll want a high-clearance vehicle for the rough Callaghan Lake FSR just to reach the trailhead, which already filters out the casual crowd.

The trail to Conflict Lake winds through roots, mud, and narrow singletrack, with a few rocky and slick sections that keep you paying attention. Past the lodge and Conflict Lake, things stay technical and then ramp up in the final 1.5 km to Ring Lake, where the grade bites a bit more but the payoff is huge: open alpine, big mountain views, wildflower meadows in summer, and a cold, clear lake that begs for a swim if you can handle the temperature. Even on weekends it can feel surprisingly quiet, and on clear days the surrounding peaks and ridge lines make it feel a long way from Whistler Village.

Right now, Ring Lake and Conflict Lake are in full summer mode with wildflowers, blueberries, and flowing creeks, which means water crossings that will almost certainly soak your shoes. Bugs are fierce, so bring serious insect repellent and maybe a head net, and know that this area has had recent aggressive grizzly activity, with signs posted at the start and hikers reporting being turned around, so carry bear spray, make noise, and be ready to back off. This is not a dog-friendly trail and is best tackled July through October when snow is gone and the alpine is open; start early, pack layers, and plan time to linger at both lakes if conditions cooperate.
