Trail Description

Rainbow Falls Loop in Whistler is one of those quick hikes that feels way bigger than its stats. At about 2.1 km with roughly 138 m of gain, it’s a short, steady climb through classic coastal forest to a loud, powerful waterfall and views toward the surrounding mountains. Most people wrap it up in around 50 minutes, so it’s an easy add-on to a Whistler day if you don’t want to commit to a long mission.

The loop climbs right away, with the first half mostly uphill on a mix of roots, rocks, and softer packed dirt. The trail winds through dense, shady forest with the sound of the river getting louder as you approach Rainbow Falls, and you can either do a quick out-and-back to the falls or complete the full loop and finish at the waterfall. On clear days you’ll catch some nice mountain glimpses, and there are a few side paths, including a short “Rainbow Falls View” spur that locals say is absolutely worth the extra minutes.

Recent hikers report the Rainbow Falls Loop as well marked overall, but there are forks where it helps to follow GPS or pay attention to flagging, especially later in the day when it feels quieter and more isolated. Expect some steep sections, wet and slippery spots after rain, and the odd mountain biker passing through. The waterfall can suddenly surge in volume, so avoid lingering in the plunge pool or right at the edge, and keep an eye out for wildlife, including the occasional annoyed-looking bear near the top. July through September is prime, but it’s a solid short hike most of the snow-free season as long as you bring decent shoes and take your time on the slick rock and roots.
