Trail Description

Pigs on the Wing Trail in Whistler is a big day out, even for strong hikers. At 17.9 km with around 1500 m of climbing to roughly 1758 m, this out-and-back route is rated very difficult for good reason: steep sections, complex junctions, and serious time on your feet. Expect a full-value mountain mission that can easily stretch longer than the “average” 8.5 hours if you’re route-finding or dealing with traffic delays getting to the trailhead.

Once you’re on the Pigs on the Wing Trail, the payoff is in the alpine terrain and wide-open views around Whistler’s high country. As you gain elevation, the trees thin and you’re rewarded with long sightlines, big sky, and, on clear days, glowing light on the surrounding peaks at sunrise or sunset. In winter or shoulder seasons, a full moon or alpenglow from the summit area can turn the descent into a pretty surreal experience.

Current reports highlight that in winter conditions this Whistler trail is much tougher, with easy navigation errors through the maze of tracks, so a GPS track is basically mandatory. Start early, carry extra layers, and plan for slow, careful travel on snow and ice, especially on the way down. Most hikers will find March through October more manageable, but even then, this is a serious objective where fitness, navigation skills, and enough daylight all matter if you want to enjoy it rather than just survive it.
