Trail Description
The Overlord Trail to Lakeside Loop in Whistler is one of those alpine walks that makes the gondola ride worth every dollar. At 6 km with about 243 m of gain, it’s short on distance but big on scenery, winding around 1,900 m in elevation with constant mountain views. Officially it’s rated easy, but most hikers on the ground call it more of a light-to-moderate outing, thanks to a few steeper, scrambly sections.
From the top of the Blackcomb gondola, you’re on well-groomed, clearly signed singletrack right away, heading out through open alpine meadows toward Blackcomb Lake. The lake itself is small and clear, good for a quick dip on a hot day, but the real payoff on the Overlord Trail to Lakeside Loop is the surrounding peaks, ridgelines, and big valley views that stay with you almost the entire circuit. Trails are generally dry, easy to follow, and you’ll probably see other hikers, wildflowers, and maybe a marmot or two along the way.
Recent reports say the trail is in great shape, with dry tread, solid signage, and some narrow sections where you’ll want decent footwear and maybe poles if you’re less confident on steeper grades. The route is very exposed, so on sunny days it gets hot fast; bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, and expect more crowds on weekends and clearer days. Most people prefer doing the Lakeside Loop clockwise for a smoother climb, and bug spray is smart in mid-summer, with the main hiking season on Blackcomb running roughly late spring through September depending on snow.
