Trail Description

Metal Dome via Callaghan Creek is a serious full-day mission just outside Whistler, rewarding anyone who puts in the effort with big alpine views and a real backcountry feel. At 18.3 km with 1,332 m of gain and a high point around 1,985 m, this out-and-back route is rated difficult for good reason: it’s long, remote, and demands solid fitness and navigation skills, especially in winter.

The approach along Callaghan Creek starts mellow but feels long, with the north-facing aspect keeping things cool and shaded even on clear days. In winter, much of the route doubles as a snowmobile track, so expect packed snow underfoot, some exhaust now and then, and wide open corridors that gradually open up to big views of the Callaghan valley and surrounding peaks near Metal Dome. Once you break into the alpine, the terrain feels wild and exposed, with the kind of scenery that makes the grind worthwhile.

Recent hikers on Metal Dome via Callaghan Creek report deep snow, complex route finding between 4–7 km, and a confusing mix of unofficial flags and markers that don’t always match GPS tracks. Creek crossings, bushwhacking, and losing the line are common, and several groups have turned back with hundreds of meters of elevation still to go, so an early start, strong navigation, and a smaller, well-organized group help a lot. In winter and early spring, plan for snowshoes, avalanche awareness, and short daylight; in summer, expect a long but more straightforward hike with less route-finding stress, though it still feels like a remote objective rather than a casual Whistler stroll.
