Trail Description

Matthews Traverse Road and Whistler Mountain is one of those Whistler hikes that feels big and alpine without eating up your whole day. This 6.1 km out-and-back gains about 555 m to around 2,166 m, so it’s short, sharp, and earns its “challenging” label even though many people pair it with the gondola and call it an easy outing. Expect about three hours on trail if you’re moving at a steady but not rushed pace.

The route ties into the Peak Express area and the Cloudraker Skybridge, so you’re getting that classic Whistler Mountain experience: rocky slopes, big views over the valley, and a real “top of the world” feel when the weather cooperates. Hikers describe it as steeper than expected, with sections that feel more like a workout than a stroll, but the payoff is the scenery around the mountain and the fun of linking lifts, viewpoints, and short walking sections into one looped adventure.

Recent reports from Matthews Traverse Road and Whistler Mountain all say the same thing: the grade is tough, the crowds can be heavy near the lifts and skybridge, and the weather makes or breaks it. Aim for a clear, sunny day, because when it’s socked in you lose most of the views and it turns into a chilly wander in the clouds. Even in summer, bring an extra layer and wind protection; you’re at high elevation and it gets cold fast. This area is usually a summer and early fall objective once snow has melted, and starting early in the day helps avoid the busiest gondola rush and gives you more time to explore without feeling hurried.
