Trail Description

Kaolis Mainline and Gargamel Loop in Whistler is a solid choice if you like your hikes steep, scrambly, and a bit under the radar. This 11.1 km loop with about 633 m of gain tops out around 1235 m and usually takes around three and a half hours, but it feels longer thanks to the grade. It’s rated challenging for good reason, with sections that feel more like a rugged bike trail than a groomed hiking route.

The loop starts on a forest service road that’s a bit of a grind and not very exciting, which is why locals recommend hiking Kaolis Mainline and Gargamel Loop counterclockwise so you come down the FSR instead of slogging up it. Going that way, you climb first through steep forest with some hands-on scrambling, then link into more rolling singletrack with solid viewpoints over the Whistler valley and surrounding peaks. Parts of the route clearly cater to mountain bikers, but on foot you get a quieter feel and better time to enjoy the scenery.

Recent hikers report that snow can linger high up, and at times there’s been too much snow to complete the full loop, so shoulder-season attempts can turn into an out-and-back. Expect very steep sections, loose dirt, and roots, so good footwear is a must, and there are regular bear sightings in this area, so carry spray and stay alert. In summer the mosquitoes on Kaolis Mainline and Gargamel Loop can be relentless, so bring bug spray, and aim for May to September for the best shot at clear, snow-free conditions.
