Trail Description

Into the Mystic, On the Rocks, and Lord of the Squirrels is one of Whistler’s big all-day missions, a 30.7 km loop with 1,530 m of gain that feels every bit as serious as it sounds. You’re out for around 11 hours on a very difficult route, tagging alpine around 1,781 m with long stretches where it’s just you, the trail, and a lot of climbing. It’s a classic Sproatt-area objective for strong hikers and advanced mountain bikers who want a full-value day.

The loop climbs steadily on well-built, machine-cut singletrack, winding through forest with mountain views flashing through the trees as you gain height. Around 12 km in you hit a lake that makes a perfect recharge stop, and if you can handle the cold, a quick dip sets you up for the final push to the summit. From the top, you get wide open views over the Whistler valley and surrounding peaks that make the long grind feel earned.

Recent hikers report the trail is well-marked and in good shape, but mosquitoes from the lake to the peak are relentless right now, so bring strong bug spray, long sleeves, and consider a head net in peak summer. Water is reasonable early on, but you should still carry plenty, especially in hotter weather, and be ready for changing conditions in the alpine even in July and August. This loop is best tackled from June through September when snow has mostly cleared, and it’s long enough that an early start, solid fitness, and a realistic turnaround time are key to enjoying Into the Mystic, On the Rocks, and Lord of the Squirrels in Whistler.
