Trail Description
Crater Rim and Farside Loop Trail in Whistler is a solid choice when you want a real hike without committing to a full alpine mission. This 8.7 km loop in the Whistler Interpretive Forest climbs about 405 m up to around 921 m, so “moderate” is fair, but the first stretch will get your heart going. Most people take around three hours, longer if you stop for photos or a swim at Loggers Lake.
Hiked counterclockwise, the Crater Rim and Farside Loop Trail hits you with a steep grind for the first 3 km, with roots, loose rock, and a few short scrambly bits before easing off into rolling terrain. Once you’re up, you get a mix of shady forest, sections of rocky ground, a loop along Loggers Lake inside the old volcanic crater, and then the fun stuff: the suspension bridge and powerful Cheakamus River rapids. Expect long stretches under tree cover, occasional open viewpoints, and a surprisingly quiet feel for something this close to Whistler Village.
Recent hikers say the trail is mostly well marked but has confusing forks, so keep AllTrails or GPS handy, especially on the backside and near the rockslide area. Bug spray is a must in summer, and you should be ready for black bear sightings; give them space and turn around if needed. The small free parking lot near the trailhead usually has space early, and the loop is hikeable from late spring into fall, with August and September offering the best combo of dry trail, warm lake swimming, and manageable crowds. Some sections run close to the road and see mountain bikers, so expect a mix of wild and developed rather than pure backcountry.
