Trail Description

Cirque Lake Trail is one of those classic “Whistler local” adventures that feels a bit off the grid in the best way. You drive up rough Callaghan Lake Road, paddle across clear Callaghan Lake to reach the trailhead, then grind up a short, steep trail to a cold, emerald bowl of water at around 1534 m. It’s only 3.2 km out and back with about 354 m of gain, but it’s rated difficult for a reason and usually takes around 1 hour 45 minutes of hiking time.

The hike itself starts in the forest before rearing up quickly on loose dirt, roots, and a few rope sections, then breaks into a boulder field and more open terrain. Views open up fast over Callaghan Lake and the surrounding peaks, and Cirque Lake at the top really delivers that “big reward for a short hike” feeling, with clear, icy water that’s amazing for a quick plunge on a hot day. On the way up and down, stay alert for offshoots and cliffy dead ends, and keep your GPS map handy so you stay on the safest line.

For 2025, the gate to Callaghan Lake is open for summer, but early season still means snow patches near Cirque Lake and even a frozen surface in June. Expect a 25–45 minute paddle each way, stronger winds and chop in the afternoon, and a chilly stream crossing right above the shore, plus dusty, slippery rock and lots of bugs once the heat kicks in, so bring bug spray, maybe a head net, and solid footwear stashed in a dry bag. The Cirque Lake Trail is best from mid-summer to early fall when the snow is gone, the lake turns turquoise, and you can actually enjoy that swim instead of just surviving it.
