Trail Description
Brew Mountain via Brew Lake Trail is one of those Whistler missions that feels way more remote than it actually is. At 22.2 km with 1355 m of gain and a high point around 1727 m, this out-and-back is a full-value day that usually takes close to nine hours. It’s rated difficult for good reason: long, rough, and quiet, with far fewer people than the more popular Roe Lake approach to Brew.
The first stretch follows a rough logging road that high-clearance vehicles can carefully drive partway, then you’re on foot into steep forest, boulder fields, and classic Coast Mountains terrain. The “trail” to Brew Lake and Brew Hut often feels more like a suggestion, with faint paths, rock hopping, and hands-on sections on sketchy inclines and descents. The payoff is big though: a calm alpine lake, views toward Black Tusk and the surrounding peaks, and the cozy Brew Hut as a hangout or overnight base if you’ve booked it.
Recent hikers are clear that Brew Mountain via Brew Lake Trail is poorly marked in sections and involves real bushwhacking, especially past the boulder field where flagging disappears. Expect route-finding, wet or slippery rock, and slow travel; download a GPS track and don’t rely on paint or signs. Late summer and early fall are the friendliest seasons, when snow is gone and creek levels are lower, and starting early gives you a buffer if the terrain or navigation slows you down. Brew Lake and the hut make the grind worth it, but if you hate off-trail travel, consider the Roe Lake route next time.
