Trail Description

Brandywine Mountain Trail sits just south of Whistler, and it’s one of those hikes that feels like a full-on alpine mission, not a casual wander. At 15.8 km with around 1450 m of gain and a high point near 2200 m, it’s rated very difficult for good reason. Most hikers are taking 6–9 hours round trip from the upper lot, and much longer if you’re grinding up from the lower access.

From the Brandywine Meadows area the trail lures you in gently with forest and open meadows, then hits you with steep, loose rock and boulder fields on the way to Brandywine Mountain. Route-finding can get confusing beyond the meadows, with cairns and faint flagging across scree and slabs, and the final push to the ridge and summit is a mix of hands-on rock and careful footwork. The payoff is huge: big glacier views, a broad ridge, and true 360-degree alpine scenery that feels a world away from Whistler Village.

Reaching the upper parking for Brandywine Mountain Trail usually needs high-clearance AWD or 4x4; the FSR is rutted, rocky, and the first big switchback turns a lot of low cars around. Expect mud, creek crossings, loose rock, and, in shoulder season, early snow near the top where spikes become helpful once temps drop. In summer, bring bug spray for the meadows, lots of water or a filter, poles for the descent, and a map or GPS since it’s easy to drift off-route in the rocks; in fall and early winter this becomes a serious outing with ice, fog, and fast-changing weather, so treat it like a proper alpine climb, not a quick Whistler day hike.
