Trail Description

Alta Lake Loop to Green Lake in Whistler is more of a relaxed tour than a rugged backcountry mission. The loop links two classic Whistler lakes on mostly paved multi-use paths, with a bit of gentle up and down but nothing too intimidating if you’re reasonably active. It’s long at 17.2 km, but the grade is mellow and the max elevation is only around 695 m, so it feels more like an extended lakeside wander than a mountain climb.

Starting from the Whistler Creekside area, you wind past Alta Lake, through patches of forest, wetlands, and quiet neighbourhood paths as you work your way up toward Green Lake. Expect a mix of lake views, boardwalk-style sections, and paved paths, with plenty of chances to stop at docks or viewpoints along Alta Lake. The route is popular with cyclists and families, so it has more of a community path vibe than a remote trail, but you still get solid mountain and water views along the way.

Recent hikers and riders say the Alta Lake Loop to Green Lake is paved or hard-packed almost the whole way, which makes it easy underfoot but also means bring good shoes for the distance rather than for rough terrain. Fall colours are starting to show, and the air is cooler, so a light layer is smart, and be bear-aware since sightings do happen along the corridor. The full loop can feel long if you’re not used to a 17 km outing, so plan snacks, water, and enough time, and aim for late spring through fall when the paths are clear and the lakeside sections are at their best.
