Trail Description
A River Runs Through It and Bart's Dark Trail Loop in Whistler is a forest wander with a bit of character. The loop is about 7.2 km with only 168 m of gain, so on paper it’s easy, but recent hikers are right to call it closer to moderate thanks to roots, twists, and bike features. It usually takes just under two hours, and you’re in the trees almost the whole time with a steady mix of shade and cool air off the creek and river.
The route winds through classic Whistler forest, crossing and paralleling the water, with wooden ramps, bridges, and jumps from the mountain bike lines all around you. You’re mostly under tall trees, so there aren’t big views, but it feels like a quiet backdoor tour of the local bike network. The trail can be walked either direction, though the bike features are built to ride north to south, and you’ll occasionally share sections with riders, runners, and dog walkers.
Current reports mention some washed-out sections in the past and occasional icy patches in colder months, so good footwear matters even though the elevation is low. As of 2024, the south part by the park has closures that may push you briefly onto the train tracks, and there are active wasp and bee nests along parts of Bart’s Dark, especially near larger wooden drops, so keep dogs close and eyes open. Snow is usually gone by spring, but this loop feels best from late spring through fall when the ground is dry, the river is running, and you can enjoy the shade without worrying about ice.
