Trail Description

Nicomekl River Paddle in White Rock, BC is a calm, flat-water out-and-back route that’s more about drifting and birdwatching than breaking a sweat. At 11.6 km with only 9 m of elevation gain and a max altitude of about 5 m, it’s very easy and usually takes just over an hour if you keep a steady pace. This is a great option if you want a mellow paddle close to town with a bit of nature and some quiet.

The Nicomekl River Paddle typically starts near Crescent Beach and follows the river inland toward the Elgin Heritage Park area before you turn around and head back. Expect wide, open water with gentle current, low marshy banks, and regular sightings of geese, mallards, and herons working the shoreline. The river isn’t very wide, so it has a more intimate feel than big lakes or open ocean, and wind exposure is usually manageable.

Recent paddlers warn that timing your trip with the tide is crucial on the Nicomekl River in White Rock. At very low tide, the water drops away from the dock and you’ll be dealing with mud, shallow sections, and sharp oysters near shore, which can be rough on gear and bare feet. At higher tides, boat traffic picks up and the narrow river can feel crowded, so aim for a moderate tide window, wear sturdy water shoes, and check local tide charts before you go, especially from April through October when use is highest.
