Trail Description
Mud Bay Boundary Dyke Trail isn’t a mountain grind; it’s a long, exposed coastal haul that sneaks up on your legs. Stretching 33.8 km out-and-back near White Rock in South Surrey, this flat dyke path looks easy on paper but the distance and lack of shade make it a challenging day out, usually around six hours. If you want a big walk without big elevation, this is one of the best options in the Mud Bay and Boundary Bay area.
The trail follows the shoreline with wide open views over Mud Bay, farm fields, and distant mountains on a clear day. It’s straight, flat, and wide, so it can feel repetitive, but the birdlife keeps things interesting: herons, shorebirds, raptors, and the odd surprise, like the baby owl one group recently found and reported to Wildlife Rescue. Mud Bay Boundary Dyke Trail is shared with cyclists, runners, and dog walkers, and the generous width makes it easy to pass and spread out, so it rarely feels crowded even on sunny weekends.
Current reports say the surface is mostly smooth gravel, fine for walking, running, and strollers, but cyclists will want decent tires as some sections can be rough, muddy, and smelly near the wetlands. On hot days this area bakes; there’s almost no shade, so bring more water than you think you need, sun protection, and bug spray, especially in late spring and summer when insects can be thick. The trail is open year-round and stays low, around 9 m elevation, but expect mud, puddles, and stronger smells at low tide after rain, and go for the cooler shoulder seasons if you’re tackling the full distance.
