Trail Description
Chickadee Loop Extended in South Surrey, near White Rock, is one of those easy city escapes that feels way more “forest” than “urban park.” The loop is 4.8 km with barely 58 m of gain, so it’s a very easy outing that usually takes about an hour at a relaxed pace. If you want a calm walk among the trees without driving up into the mountains, this one hits the mark.
The trail winds through Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park, with wide, well-maintained paths and steady shade from the trees, which is great on hot or bright days. You’ll share parts of Chickadee Loop Extended with cyclists and runners, but people are generally respectful and there’s lots of room to move aside. It’s surprisingly quiet considering it sits right in the middle of the city, and many locals use it as their go-to “quick forest fix.”
Recent hikers say the route is mostly flat, not very muddy, and easy on the knees, though the first section can be a bit confusing with the bike trails crossing through, so using a GPS app helps. Watch for tree stumps and roots, especially if you head out at dusk or after dark, as it can feel a bit eerie and tripping is common with casual footwear. Parking around South Surrey Athletic Park can be a bit of a hassle at busy times, but once you’re on Chickadee Loop Extended, it’s a peaceful, dog-friendly walk that works almost year-round, with February through October being the most popular window.
