Trail Description
VanDusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver is more of a slow wander than a hike, and that’s exactly the appeal. This 2.9 km loop winds through 55 acres of themed gardens, ponds, and quiet corners, with only 38 m of elevation gain and a top elevation around 117 m. It usually takes about 39 minutes, but most people linger much longer just exploring side paths and soaking in the atmosphere.
The VanDusen Botanical Gardens loop is mostly paved or well-groomed gravel, so it’s easy on the legs and accessible for almost anyone. You’ll pass lakes like Forest Lake and Shaughnessy Lake, stroll under mature trees, and weave between areas like the Japanese maples, meditation garden, and rose garden. Views are more about curated landscapes, reflections on the water, and interesting plants from around the world than big mountain vistas.
Recent visitors report very easy walking and calm, relaxing vibes, but the display changes a lot with the seasons. In late fall and winter there are fewer flowers, so expect more trees, shrubs, and structure rather than big color, while spring and summer bring stronger blooms and even the smell of flowers in the air. There is an entrance fee to access VanDusen Botanical Gardens, and hours can be limited, with some days closing around 5 p.m., so check the current schedule and pricing before you go. The loop is open year-round, dogs aren’t allowed, and this is a good choice when you want a gentle, low-effort walk inside Vancouver without committing to a full-on hike.
