Trail Description

Pacific Spirit via Council, Top and Sword Fern is a mellow forest loop in Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Regional Park, right by UBC. At 6.6 km with only about 62 m of gain and a high point around 101 m, it’s more of a relaxed walk than a serious hike, and most people finish it in about an hour and a half. If you want an easy escape into tall trees without leaving the city, this is one of the go-to options.

The loop links Council, Top, and Sword Fern trails into a smooth circuit on wide, well-maintained paths. You’re in classic Vancouver coastal forest the whole time, with dense greenery, ferns, and enough canopy that you barely notice light rain or summer sun. The grade is gentle, so it works well for newer hikers, families, or a casual run, and you can access the route from multiple points along 16th Avenue with free roadside parking and nearby washrooms at key trailheads.

Right now, Pacific Spirit via Council, Top and Sword Fern is in easy shape for walking and running, but expect a lot of dogs, especially on weekends. Reviews mention that not every owner keeps their dog close, so if you’re hoping for a hassle-free run, avoid Saturday afternoons and stick to quieter morning or weekday laps. The trail is open year-round, handles rain fairly well thanks to the forest cover, and is best enjoyed as a chill, low-effort loop when you just want some green space and an easy hour outside in Vancouver.
