Trail Description

Spanish Banks Paddle in Vancouver is a super mellow coastal loop that trades elevation for long, easy time on the water. At 6.6 km with only 2 m of gain, it’s more of a relaxed ocean outing than a workout, and most people take their time, stretching it into a 5-hour-plus cruise with plenty of floating, chatting, and beach breaks.

The route starts by the Jericho Sailing Centre parking lot, one of the classic launch spots in Vancouver for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. You’ll head west along Jericho Beach and Spanish Banks, with constant views of downtown Vancouver, the North Shore mountains, and big freighters anchored in English Bay. On calm days it feels like paddling on a giant lake, but you still get that open-ocean vibe and wide, clear sightlines the whole way.

Current conditions are generally friendly, but wind is the main thing to watch; Spanish Banks can get choppy in the afternoon, so earlier starts are usually smoother. There’s zero shade once you’re on the water, so sun protection, hydration, and a secure leash or PFD are non-negotiable, even though the paddle itself is rated very easy. Spanish Banks Paddle is doable year-round thanks to Vancouver’s mild climate, but in colder months you’ll want extra layers or a wetsuit, and always check tides, marine forecasts, and boat traffic before you head out.
