Trail Description
Sword Fern Trail in Vancouver is one of those rare city walks that feels way more remote than it is. This 5.3 km out-and-back route in Pacific Spirit Regional Park is almost completely flat, super straightforward to follow, and usually takes just over an hour, so it’s an easy add-on before or after work or a relaxed weekend stroll.
The trail winds through classic West Coast forest, with tall trees, thick ferns, and that damp, earthy smell that makes you forget you’re in a big city. Sections feel like a quiet green tunnel, then open up as you work toward Spanish Banks, where the beach and ocean views are your payoff and a good spot to linger before heading back.
Recent hikers say Sword Fern Trail is generally quiet in the woods but can get busy and a bit tight when cyclists and walkers mix on the narrower sections, so keep an eye and ear out. Shade is good in most of the forest, but between West Mall and Chancellor Boulevard the cover thins out, which can feel hot on warmer days. The trail is very easy, well-maintained, and dog-friendly, with year-round access, though it feels especially nice on a misty or drizzly day when the forest really comes alive.
