Trail Description
Sunset Beach to Second Beach is one of those classic Vancouver walks that locals keep coming back to. This 4.2 km out-and-back along the West End waterfront is flat, easy, and usually done in under an hour, which makes it a solid “getting in shape” route if you’re building up to bigger hikes. You’re right by downtown, but it still feels like you’ve stepped out of city mode for a bit.
The trail follows the famous Vancouver Seawall, hugging the shoreline from Sunset Beach, past English Bay, and over toward Second Beach on the edge of Stanley Park. It’s paved, wide, and friendly for walkers, runners, and cyclists, with constant views of English Bay, freighters out in the harbour, and the North Shore mountains on a clear day. The elevation gain is barely noticeable at around 28 m, so you can focus on the scenery instead of your lungs.
Recent users are treating this as a training loop, even joking they feel like Denzel in Training Day getting ready for bigger missions like Black Tusk, so it’s great for easy conditioning laps. The path is open year-round and usually clear, though it can be windy and wet in fall and winter and very busy on sunny weekends. Stick to the right, watch for bikes, keep dogs leashed, and if you want more ocean vibes and fewer near-misses, walk on the Seawall side closest to the water instead of the inner path.
