Trail Description

The Spanish Banks and Jericho Beach trail in Vancouver is more of a chill seaside stroll than a hardcore hike, and that’s exactly the appeal. This 8.5 km out-and-back route follows the shoreline with barely any elevation gain, so it’s easy on the legs and great if you just want fresh air, ocean views, and a steady walk that takes around an hour and a half.

Walking from Jericho Beach toward Spanish Banks, you get constant views across English Bay toward downtown Vancouver, the North Shore mountains, and over to West Vancouver. The path is wide and shared with runners and cyclists, with sandy stretches, grassy park areas, and a rocky section near the far end of Spanish Banks where you’ll slow down a bit and watch your footing. It feels more like a long beach walk home from the pool than a traditional hike, with lots of spots to stop, sit, or dip your feet in the water.

Recent visitors mention some muddy patches and exposed roots, so expect to dial your speed back to around 60–75% in those sections, especially after rain. The Spanish Banks and Jericho Beach trail is fully exposed with almost no shade, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and water on sunny days, and be ready for wind off the water. It’s open year-round, works well for walking, running, biking, or family outings, and you can swim or let the kids play in the sand before or after your walk, making it one of Vancouver’s easiest and most flexible coastal routes.
