Trail Description

Council Trail - Sword Fern Trail - Marine Trail - Clinton Trail is one of those rare Vancouver loops where you can disappear into the trees but still be back at the car in under two hours. This 8.4 km loop near Musqueam in South Vancouver is very easy, almost flat, and feels more like a long city walk through forest than a mountain hike, which makes it ideal if you just want to move your legs without grinding up big hills.

The route links wide, well-used paths through classic coastal forest, with tall evergreens, thick sword ferns, and a surprisingly wild feel considering how close you are to the city. You’ll pass sections of boggy habitat, some rooty stretches, and a mix of walkers, runners, and cyclists on the shared sections, while Sword Fern Trail itself stays quieter with no bikes or horses allowed.

Recent reports say the trail is dry, easy underfoot, and popular for quick afternoon runs and casual hikes, though it can get busy on weekends with dog walkers and other users. Smoke can drift in during wildfire season, so check air quality before you go, and aim for mornings or weekdays if you want a calmer vibe. The loop is open year-round, spring brings fresh green everywhere, and as long as you’re comfortable with the moderate distance, the minimal elevation and frequent company make Council Trail - Sword Fern Trail - Marine Trail - Clinton Trail feel safe and accessible in almost any season.
