Trail Description

Council Trail - Sword Fern Trail - Imperial Trail is a mellow forest loop on the west side of Vancouver, near the Musqueam area, that feels far from city traffic without actually being far at all. At 4.3 km with only about 56 m of gain and a high point around 84 m, it’s more of an easy walk than a true hike, and most people finish it in under an hour. It’s a go-to spot for locals who want a shady, low-effort spin through the woods with friends, kids, or a dog in tow.

The loop winds through classic coastal forest, with big old trees, lots of sword ferns, and “nursery” logs sprouting new growth along the way. The paths are wide, well-graded, and in many sections paved or hard-packed, so you’re not constantly dodging roots or rocks. It’s relaxed, quiet enough between groups, and has that soft forest light that makes even a quick walk feel like a reset.

Recent reports say the Council Trail - Sword Fern Trail - Imperial Trail is in great shape and well maintained, with plenty of shade and only gentle slopes that most kids and casual walkers handle easily. Families like it for bikes and strollers, though smaller kids may need to push on a few short rises, and dog owners use it heavily, which means lots of off-leash dogs and unfortunately some dog waste on the sides of the trail. Go early or on weekdays if you want it less busy, keep an eye out for uncontrolled dogs, and plan to use this Vancouver loop year-round, with fall and cool summer mornings being especially comfortable.
