Trail Description
Surrey Lake Loop in Surrey, BC is a quick, easy escape when you want some nature without leaving the city. The loop is only 2.3 km with about 23 m of gentle gain, so it’s more of a relaxed walk than a workout, usually done in under half an hour. It circles Surrey Lake and wetland habitat, so even though you’re close to traffic and neighborhoods, it still feels like a small green pocket in the middle of town.
The trail itself is mostly flat with just one short, mild incline, so it works well for families, casual walkers, and anyone easing into hiking. You get filtered views of Surrey Lake from a few points along the loop, and this area is known for ducks, geese, and other water birds, especially in the quieter morning and evening hours. It’s a multi-use path, but the mellow grade and frequent foot traffic make Surrey Lake Loop more of a walking route than a serious biking destination.
Right now, expect things to be on the messy side. Heavy equipment has been running along the lakefront, leaving sections of the Surrey Lake Loop very muddy with rutted tire tracks, and some stretches can be quite wet after rain. There are thorny plants brushing the edges of the path, so keep dogs close and leashed, and be aware that parts of the loop can smell from nearby sewers and get noisy with drones and general park traffic. This loop is open year-round, but it’s most pleasant in drier weather; if you go in the rainy season, wear waterproof shoes and be ready for mud.
