Trail Description
Barnston Island in Surrey isn’t a mountain adventure, it’s a mellow loop with a bit of a quirky commute. You start with a tiny free ferry ride across the Fraser River, then walk or bike a 10.3 km paved road that circles the island with barely any elevation gain. It’s an easy, flat route that usually takes around two hours, and feels more like a relaxed country road outing than a classic forest hike.
The Barnston Island loop is basically one long, quiet road with river views, farm fields, and big open sky. There isn’t a lot of variety and sections can feel repetitive, but that simplicity makes it great if you just want to move, think, and zone out. Highlights are the river viewpoints, including a sandy spot with a solid view of the Golden Ears Bridge that makes a good lunch break.
Recent visitors say the pavement is older and a bit rough, fine for walking and casual biking but not ideal for skinny road bike tires. There’s very little shade, so on sunny days it can feel hot and exposed; bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. There is only one outhouse on the Barnston Island trail at a lookout early on the loop, bugs can be annoying in season, and with ferry timing and travel you should plan for half a day door-to-door, especially in spring and summer when it’s most pleasant.
