Trail Description

Widgeon Falls Paddle Route and Hike in Pitt Meadows is one of those classic Lower Mainland day trips that feels like a mini adventure, without being hardcore. The 15.3 km out-and-back combines a calm paddle across Widgeon Slough with an easy walk to a set of powerful falls and swim-friendly pools. It’s rated easy with only about 161 m of gain, but plan for a full outing, especially if you’re newer to paddling.

The day starts at the Pitt Lake boat launch, where you paddle up the slough toward the Widgeon Creek campground. Early mornings are usually glassy and quiet, with mist hanging over the water and big mountain views opening up on the way back once things clear. From the campground, it’s a 30–45 minute hike through forest on a mix of road and trail to Widgeon Falls, with rocky, rooty sections and a short steeper bit near the end. Keep going past the main viewpoint to scramble higher and find deeper, quieter pools for cold plunges away from the crowds.

Current reports say this route gets busy on sunny weekends, with parking filling by mid-morning, so start early or aim for a weekday. Water levels and tides matter: at low tide you may have to hop out and drag your kayak or SUP over shallow sections, while strong outgoing tides or post-rain conditions can mean a tougher upstream push and raging falls with no safe swimming near the main drop. Bring a proper life jacket (patrols do turn people back), water shoes or sandals with grip for the rocks, and bear spray, as bears are often spotted along Widgeon Creek. Best season for the Widgeon Falls Paddle Route and Hike is late spring through early fall, when water levels and temps are more forgiving.
