Trail Description
South Arm Marshes Spirit Trail in Delta, BC is one of those short walks that sticks with you. This 1.4 km loop is flat, easy, and usually done in under 20 minutes, but the hand-carved “spirits” tucked into the woods turn it into a quirky little adventure. If you like low-effort, high-interest walks with a local feel, this one delivers.
The trail winds through cottonwood forest and marshland, with side paths leading to more carvings and quiet corners. A map at the start really helps if you want to track down most of the sculptures, though you’ll backtrack a bit to see everything. Birdsong is constant, and you’ll hear plenty of different calls as you walk, making South Arm Marshes Spirit Trail feel surprisingly wild for such a short loop.
Recent hikers mention the carvings are in great shape and worth slowing down for, but the ground can get muddy and slick, especially after rain, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. The trail is very easy in terms of elevation, with only about 9 metres of gain and a max height of around 7 metres, but roots and wet patches can still be slippery. This part of Delta is best enjoyed in the drier months, and it’s worth noting the South Arm Marshes Wildlife Management Area has seasonal gate hours: 8:00–17:00 from October to April and 8:00–20:00 from May to September, so plan your visit around those times.
