Trail Description

Reifel Bird Sanctuary Loop in Delta, BC is less of a “hike” and more of a slow, easy wander through some of the best bird habitat in the Lower Mainland. This 3.4 km loop is dead flat, with only about 10 m of gain and a max elevation of around 5 m, so it’s accessible for almost anyone and usually takes under an hour, unless you stop a lot for photos, which you will.

The loop follows dikes and winding paths around ponds, wetlands, and quiet channels, with side trails that let you stretch the walk into a longer explore. Expect ducks, geese, and seasonal visitors all over the place, plus a lookout tower at the back of the sanctuary where you get a wider view of the marshes and sometimes birds landing right beside you. Some paths are shaded and narrow around the ponds, others are wide and fully exposed, so the feel of the walk changes as you go.

Current reports say the Reifel Bird Sanctuary Loop is in great shape, with well-maintained, flat trails and lots of waterfowl, though bird variety can dip at certain times of year. There’s a small entry fee, and you should buy the official birdseed on-site instead of bringing your own. Reservations are now required and parking is limited, especially on weekends, so book ahead. Bring a camera, sunscreen or a hat for the sunny sections, be ready for bugs and bird poop on the paths, and plan to spend extra time before or after your loop just watching the birds do their thing.
