Trail Description
Boundary Bay Dyke Trail in Delta, BC is one long, flat grind in the best way possible. This 34.4 km out-and-back route follows the shoreline with barely any elevation gain, but the distance and constant wind make it a legit challenge that earns its “Challenging” rating. Expect a big day out at around six hours if you’re walking the full length, with wide open views and zero shelter from the elements.
The trail surface is mostly flat gravel on top of the dyke, with farm fields on one side and Boundary Bay and the Strait of Georgia on the other. On a clear day you get huge sky, distant mountain views, and tons of bird activity, especially in migration seasons. When the tide is out, you can drop down from the Boundary Bay Dyke Trail onto firm sand and wander around tidal pools, which helps break up what some people find to be a pretty monotonous, straight-line walk.
Recent users report strong winds in at least one direction almost every time, so bring layers and expect a headwind on the way out or back. Parts of the gravel are worn with potholes, and you’ll share the route with cyclists and the odd horse, plus some manure and occasional fertilizer smells from nearby farms. The trail is open year-round and usually walkable in all seasons, but it’s fully exposed, so sun, wind, and winter chill all hit harder here; plan your distance, bring enough water, and consider doing a shorter section if you’re not up for the full 34 km of Delta shoreline.
