Trail Description
White Rock in Coquitlam is a stout grind of a hike, not a casual stroll. This 8.9 km out-and-back climbs about 856 m to roughly 979 m, and most of that gain feels like it comes in long, steady bursts. Expect a solid workout that usually takes around four and a half hours, with big views as your reward if you push past the early viewpoints.
The trail starts in classic Coquitlam rainforest, with mossy trunks, dripping ferns, and a narrow dirt path weaving through roots. The grade kicks in early and doesn’t really let up, so you’re climbing almost the whole way, but you get quick payoffs at the first viewpoints and then bigger panoramas toward West Vancouver and Eagle Ridge if you continue. On clear days the higher lookouts open up to wide city and mountain views, while small creeks and waterfalls break up the climb along the way.
Recent hikers report a very steep but well-marked route, with roots that turn slick in the rain and snow lingering near the top well into spring, sometimes to the point of postholing and “almost impenetrable” travel. In dry summer conditions the trail can feel fast and “cooked,” but shoulder seasons bring frost, patchy snow, and cooler air, so traction and layers are smart. This is not ideal for true beginners despite what some might say; bring bear spray if you’re heading beyond the first viewpoint into flatter meadow sections where wildlife is common, start early, and check recent reports if you’re aiming to reach the higher lookouts on White Rock in Coquitlam.
