Trail Description

Tangled Summit via Halvor Lunden Trail is a long, punchy grind above Coquitlam and Anmore that rewards strong legs and solid navigation skills. At 13.7 km with about 1,100 m of gain, it’s a serious day out that usually takes over 6 hours, especially if you tack on Mount Beautiful. This one is rated difficult for a reason: steep sections, snow for a good chunk of the year, and some light route-finding.

The Halvor Lunden Trail climbs steadily through forest, with a mix of roots, rocks, and a few muddy stretches depending on the season. There’s no real view at Tangled Summit itself, so most hikers push on toward the outer loop and Mount Beautiful for the better viewpoints when the weather cooperates. Expect a quieter feel than the more popular Coquitlam hikes, with long stretches where you might not see anyone.

Recent reports say the park gate hours are currently around 8 am to 4:30 pm, so start early or risk getting stuck behind a locked gate. Snow often starts around the falls area and gets deep higher up, with 8-foot drifts reported near the top in winter and spring; microspikes are essential from the first lake, and snowshoes are strongly recommended in heavy snow. The shortcut to the west loop can be very bushy and vague under snow, the final ascent to Mount Beautiful can feel like a scramble, and you need to make sure you start on the actual Halvor Lunden Trail since nearby bike routes don’t always connect cleanly.
