Trail Description

Sasamat Lake in Belcarra Regional Park, just north of Port Moody near Coquitlam, is a super easy loop that feels more like a scenic walk than a hike. The Sasamat Lake loop is only 3.2 km with barely any elevation, so it works for kids, grandparents, and anyone just looking to stretch their legs by the water. Expect calm water views, lots of people swimming and paddling in summer, and a relaxed, social vibe on nice days.

The trail circles close to the shoreline, weaving through tall trees with frequent peeks of the lake and a few short ups and downs to keep it from feeling totally flat. Normally you cross the lake on the floating walkway, but right now the boardwalk section is closed, so you can’t complete a true loop and end up repeating part of the trail. Even so, it’s a quick, peaceful outing, especially on cloudy days or early mornings when it’s quieter and you can actually hear the water instead of everyone’s beach music.

Current reports say the path is well maintained and very easy, but not stroller friendly the whole way, and the dog-friendly route can be confusing at first because dogs aren’t allowed on White Pine Beach or the floating bridge. Follow the beach bypass signs and be ready to walk briefly near the road with your pup. Parking at Sasamat Lake fills fast on weekends and sunny afternoons, and it’s pay parking now, so arriving early, taking transit from Port Moody, and bringing a swimsuit for a post-walk dip is the way to go; keep food in your car, as rangers have been warning about a hungry bear in the area.
